_davDUPLICATE cover showing verified duplicate file groups
Overview

_davDUPLICATE is a cross-platform desktop app for finding true duplicates through a size → quick hash → full BLAKE3 → byte-for-byte pipeline while keeping analysis on-device. Stable release 26.10.3 preserves detection, selection, hard-link awareness and Trash/Recycle Bin cleanup while aligning motion and navigation with _davstudios, removing the release number from the ordinary UI and using the Windows GUI subsystem without a separate console.

01

The idea

Two files can share a name without being identical, or have completely different names while containing exactly the same data. _davDUPLICATE was built to base duplicate detection on actual file contents rather than superficial hints such as filenames or extensions.

The second principle is safety: no file is deleted automatically. Results remain reviewable before any action, hard links are excluded from duplicated-storage calculations and cleanup uses the operating system Trash/Recycle Bin instead of permanent deletion. Version 26.10.3 preserves this behavior exactly and introduces no functional changes to duplicate detection, selection or cleanup.

02

Development

Scanning can start from files and folders chosen through native selectors or drag & drop. Folders are scanned recursively without following symlinks; files are grouped by size first, then passed through a quick hash, full BLAKE3 hash and final byte-for-byte comparison only when they remain genuine candidates. Scanning can be cancelled while it is running.

Results show groups of identical files, per-file size and reclaimable space. The view can be filtered by search, minimum size and extension, while duplicate selection can be manual or automated with Keep oldest, Keep newest, shortest path and preferred-folder strategies.

Hard-link awareness prevents physically shared data from being reported as reclaimable duplicate storage. Before cleanup, the user explicitly confirms the selected files; they are moved to the system Trash/Recycle Bin and completed cleanup operations are recorded in a local activity log. The interface supports Italian and English plus System, Light and Dark themes.

Outcome

_davDUPLICATE 26.10.3 is a stable local-first release for Windows, macOS and Linux. It requires no account, uploads or cloud processing and continues to distinguish hard links from truly reclaimable storage, always leaving cleanup confirmation to the user.

Version 26.10.3 keeps package.json, package-lock.json, Tauri, Cargo.toml and Cargo.lock synchronized, preserves studio.dav.duplicate and keeps icon artwork unchanged. Functional changes are limited to interface polish: motion, transitions between Exact Duplicates, Activity and Settings, theme reveal, support wording, removal of the release number from the UI and a Windows Release build without a separate CMD window.

I ran the supplied package test suite directly: 25/25 tests passed. Checks cover duplicate selection, hard-link-aware reclaimable space, filters, metadata, icons, motion, Windows GUI subsystem, README/support wording, version sync/CRLF, UI without a release number and source auditing.
