Convert, extract and compress audio and video entirely locally.
_davMEDIA is a cross-platform desktop toolbox for converting, extracting and compressing audio and video entirely on-device with bundled FFmpeg and FFprobe. Stable release 26.10.3 preserves the media engine while updating motion and navigation to the _davstudios language, removing the release number from the ordinary UI, documenting FFmpeg/FFprobe in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md and using the Windows GUI subsystem plus CREATE_NO_WINDOW to prevent extra consoles during processing.
Many media conversion tools require uploading large files to external services or expose FFmpeg's complexity directly. _davMEDIA was created to bring common operations into a readable desktop interface while keeping both the content and processing on the user's device.
The workflow is designed to be reusable: add files or folders, let FFprobe inspect their technical characteristics, choose an operation, then reconfigure and process the same queue again in another format without reloading the source files.
Video conversion targets MP4, MKV, WebM and MOV, while audio conversion targets MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC and Opus. The backend distinguishes real video streams from embedded attached_pic cover artwork, preserves the actual stream indexes and uses FFprobe to read format, codecs, duration, resolution, frame rate, sample rate, channels and file size.
Video conversion and compression provide Fast, Balanced and Small profiles plus Original, 1080p, 720p and 480p resolutions. Video compression outputs MP4 H.264/AAC, while audio compression outputs M4A AAC; audio extraction allows format and bitrate selection. MP4 and MOV are normalized for compatibility with H.264, AAC, yuv420p pixel format and faststart.
Files and folders can be added through native pickers or drag and drop, with optional recursive scanning that does not follow symlinks. Every job exposes real progress and can be cancelled; partial outputs are removed after cancellation or failure. FFmpeg diagnostics remain available in the activity history, while destination filenames are made unique automatically when a matching output already exists.
_davMEDIA 26.10.3 is a stable local-first release for Windows, macOS and Linux built with Tauri 2, Rust, JavaScript, Vite 8, FFmpeg and FFprobe. Conversion, audio extraction, compression, stream mapping, queueing, diagnostics and safe output behavior remain functionally unchanged, and media is never uploaded to external services.
Version 26.10.3 aligns motion, page transitions and theme changes with the _davstudios website, removes the release number from the ordinary interface and prevents extra console windows on Windows for both the app and FFmpeg/FFprobe. The repository now includes THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md: original _davMEDIA code remains MIT, while ffmpeg-static / ffprobe-static 5.3.0 binaries retain their GPL-3.0-or-later terms.
I ran the supplied package test suite directly: 41/41 tests passed. Coverage includes the media/FFmpeg engine, FFprobe compatibility, queue/container behavior, metadata, motion, Windows GUI/CREATE_NO_WINDOW, UI without a release number, third-party notices, bilingual releases, version synchronization, CRLF handling and Vite 8/Oxc policy.
Original _davMEDIA code is published under the MIT License. The FFmpeg and FFprobe binaries shipped with the app are separate components: the current build comes from ffmpeg-static / ffprobe-static 5.3.0 and is subject to GPL-3.0-or-later.
The bundled binary configuration enables GPL components and the version3 option, so the MIT label does not extend to FFmpeg/FFprobe. Redistribution must preserve the licences, attributions and other obligations that apply to the actual build included in the release.
