Overview

_davSPACE is a local-first disk-space analyzer for Windows, macOS and Linux with read-only recursive scanning, largest-file/folder views, categories, filters, search, pagination and cancellation. Stable release 26.10.4 preserves the scan engine while aligning the experience with the _davstudios motion system through real section transitions, radial theme reveal, no release number in the ordinary UI and a Windows GUI subsystem with a console-free Explorer helper.

01

The idea

When a drive fills up, the problem is not only freeing space: it is understanding exactly where that space went. _davSPACE was designed as an analysis tool before a cleanup tool, giving users a clear view of real folder and file usage without relying on aggressive routines or hard-to-audit automatic actions.

The application is intentionally read-only. Scanning never deletes, moves or renames anything: it collects sizes, counts and categories, reports inaccessible items and lets the user reveal files or folders in the system file manager when manual action is needed.

02

Development

The Rust backend uses walkdir to recursively traverse the selected folder or drive without following symbolic links. Hidden items can be included optionally, and Settings can exclude specific folder names — such as node_modules or .git — before scanning. Access errors are counted rather than aborting the whole analysis.

While scanning, the interface receives progress updates with the number of files, bytes analyzed and the current path. The operation can be cancelled at any time and _davSPACE still returns the partial results collected up to that point, so the work already completed is not discarded.

Overview summarizes total space, file and folder counts, inaccessible items and the distribution across Video, Images, Audio, Archives, Documents, Code and Other. Largest files adds name/path search, category filtering and a minimum-size threshold, while Folders ranks paths by recursive size and file count.

Files and folders remain available without an artificial cap on the number of scanned items; pagination keeps the interface readable instead. Any result can be revealed directly in the system file manager — Explorer on Windows, Finder on macOS or xdg-open on Linux — without changing the analyzed data. Light/dark themes and Italian/English complete the desktop workflow.

Outcome

_davSPACE 26.10.4 is a stable local-first release built with Tauri 2, Rust, JavaScript, Vite 8 and walkdir. Scanning remains read-only, does not follow symlinks, supports cancellation with partial results and never modifies analyzed files automatically.

Version 26.10.4 keeps npm, package-lock, Tauri, Cargo and Cargo.lock synchronized, preserves studio.dav.space and keeps icon artwork pixel-for-pixel identical. Visible changes are the motion system, transitions between Overview, Largest Files, Folders and Settings, theme reveal and release-number removal from the UI; on Windows, both the app and Explorer helper avoid extra console windows.

I ran the supplied package test suite directly: 33/33 tests passed, including a run with Cargo.lock physically converted to CRLF. Checks cover scanning and filters, motion, Windows GUI/Explorer helper behavior, UI without a release number, README/support wording, release synchronization and functional preservation of the scan engine.
